At Rock optiX, we understand that your eyewear is an essential part of your daily life. Not only do they help you see the world clearly and help prevent eye strain, but they also make a statement about your style and personality. That’s why we offer a wide range of frames and lens options designed to meet your unique needs and preferences.

However, keeping your glasses in pristine condition can be a challenge, especially when it comes to preventing scratches on your lenses. While there is no true way to get scratches out of your glasses, we can share expert tips on how to properly care for your lenses to avoid scratches, ensuring that your Rock optiX eyewear remains as clear and stylish as the day you got them!

Proper Care of Lenses to Help Prevent Scratches

Clean your glasses with a mixture of mild soap and warm water. Gently rub the lenses with a soft microfiber cloth to remove dirt and grime. Sometimes, scratches are only superficial and can be minimized with proper cleaning.

Consulting With Your Eye Care Team

For optimal lens care and scratch prevention, regular consultations with your optician or optometrist are important. Our eye care experts can provide personalized advice on how to best protect your lenses based on your specific needs and lifestyle.

We can recommend preventive measures such as suitable cleaning techniques and the best type of scratch-resistant coatings for your lens material, making sure that your eyewear remains in top condition. Regular exams also allow for timely intervention before minor issues become significant problems.

Invest in a Scratch-Resistant Coating

To prevent scratches from occurring in the first place, consider investing in a scratch-resistant coating. Manufacturers use materials like diamond-like carbon and polycrystalline diamond to create durable, optically clear films on lenses, making them more resistant to scratches.

These protective coatings are often applied during the production of your glasses, creating a barrier that makes your lenses less susceptible to damage.

If you lead an active lifestyle or are prone to accidents, this added layer of protection can help preserve your lenses and extend the lifespan of your glasses.

What Won’t Work to Remove Scratches?

There is a lot of advice out there for removing scratches with home remedies.  However, at best, these procedures will be ineffective; at worst, they could aggravate the scratches or destroy your lenses.

Toothpaste

Toothpaste is frequently recommended for scratch removal because of its abrasive characteristics, which can help smooth away the marks. However, this same property of toothpaste can cause additional damage or remove protective coatings.

Baking Soda & Salt

Baking soda and salt are occasionally recommended as home treatments for removing scratches from lenses.  However, they too are abrasive, and too harsh for fragile lenses and protective coatings. Using either substance may result in further scratches and irreparable damage.

Baking soda and salt can induce warping, degrade lens coatings, and render lenses opaque rather than efficiently removing scratches.

Metal polish

Metal polish is occasionally marketed as a two-in-one solution for scratch removal and lens cleaning, although it really just contains abrasives meant to remove fine scratches from metal surfaces rather than glass.

Metal polish can scratch fragile lens surfaces and remove protective coatings.

Wax

Wax polish, such as automobile wax or furniture wax, is frequently recommended for repairing scratches on the basis that it can help fill in scratches and improve their appearance.

However, lens materials are not the same as the surfaces for which wax polish is designed. Wax can cause additional damage, interfere with lens coatings that improve clarity, reduce glare, protect against UV rays, and leave a film or residue that obstructs visibility.

Preventative Action Is Key

Ultimately, preventive action is the most successful remedy.  If you wish to avoid scratches completely:

  • When not in use, store your glasses in a sturdy case
  • Avoid laying them face down on harsh surfaces
  • Avoid leaving them on your car’s dashboard on a hot day
  • Don’t wipe the lenses of your glasses while they’re dry, as this can cause any debris on the lenses to scratch them

Developing these practices will help safeguard your glasses and reduce the likelihood of scratches.
