Exploring Different Eye Issues

Learning about the forms of eye disease can help you recognize some of the signs. Early recognition and diagnosis can make a big difference in eye disease management.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that affect and damage the optic nerve.

Some forms of glaucoma can develop due to fluid pressure building up in the eye, called intraocular pressure, that can disrupt the image transmission to the brain.

At Rock optiX, we use Goldmann applanation tonometry to measure intraocular pressure and help diagnose glaucoma. For more information, please visit our page on glaucoma management.

Cataracts develop when the normally clear lens of the eye becomes clouded due to proteins in the eye clumping together, preventing the lens from sending clear images to the retina

Vision changes due to cataracts can be corrected with prescription lenses, but surgery is the only option to fully restore vision.

For more information, visit our cataract surgery consultation page.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye condition that blurs your central vision. AMD occurs due to damage to your macula, which is responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision.

AMD is the leading cause of vision loss in older adults.

There are 2 main types of AMD:

  • Dry AMD is the most common form of the disease, occurring when the macula thins.
  • Wet AMD is a late-stage type of AMD that causes faster and more severe vision loss. Wet AMD is the less common form of the disease, occurring when abnormal blood vessels grow in the back of the eye and damage the macula.

Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is the inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines the eyelid and covers the white of the eyes, caused by bacterial or viral infections or allergic reactions.

Conjunctivitis can be contagious and may cause eye pain and severe redness.

The common signs and symptoms of conjunctivitis can include:

  • Eye redness
  • Itchy eyes
  • Discharge in the affected eye
  • A gritty feeling in the eyes
