Does Health Insurance Cover Eye Exams?

Book Appointment

While some health insurance plans do cover routine eye exams, having both medical and vision insurance will ensure the most coverage for your eye care. Understanding the differences between vision insurance and health insurance is extremely helpful when getting the care you need at an affordable price.

Can I use medical insurance for an eye exam?

Medical insurance is a type of insurance that helps pay for different medical expenses. Since eye exams are often considered preventative care, they may be included in some medical insurance plans.

To know for sure whether or not your medical insurance covers eye exams, you should look at your insurance plan’s summary of benefits or contact your insurance company.

Do I need medical insurance for my eye exam?

If your medical insurance does not cover routine eye care, it is still important to provide your medical insurance information to your eye doctor in case any health concerns arise during your appointment.

Dr. Hrach O.D. has more than 20 years of experience evaluating eye health and treating eye diseases, such as glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, and eye infection. Any visits that include evaluation or procedures for health conditions are typically not covered by vision insurance and must be billed to medical insurance plans.

Do I need vision insurance?

While some medical insurances may have coverage for routine eye care, many patients find that they also need vision insurance to cover the cost of eye exams and eyewear. Like medical insurance, vision insurance requires a monthly premium. In exchange, the insurance company agrees to help pay for routine vision expenses.

There is variation in coverage for vision insurance plans. However, plans typically cover routine eye exams, leaving patients responsible for only a small copay.

Some vision insurance plans provide benefits to be applied to glasses and contact lens purchases, while others provide a benefit only for glasses or only for contacts.

Before choosing a vision plan, it is important to understand the plan’s coverage and costs to you. It is also important to determine when your plan renews each year and when your benefits will expire.

If you are already enrolled in vision insurance, you can find this information by going on to your patient portal or by calling Rock optiX. We are here to help!
