The Facts about Dry Eye Disease

Dry eye disease happens when your tears can’t keep your eyes adequately moisturized. Either your eyes aren’t producing enough tears, or the quality of your tears is insufficient.

Your tears are made up of 3 important layers:

  • Oily layer—keeps the tear surface smooth and prevents your tears from evaporating too quickly.
  • Watery layer—washes dirt and debris out of the eyes to keep them clean.
  • Mucus layer—helps spread your tears across the eye’s surface and makes them stick.

When you blink, your tears spread across the surface of your eye to keep them moist, nourished, and healthy. If one or more of these layers are affected, you can wind up with the uncomfortable symptoms of dry eye.

Artificial tears are eye drops used to provide moisture to your eyes. These drops add the same elements as natural tears to help soothe your symptoms.

There are plenty of brands and varieties of artificial tears available over-the-counter, so it’s best to talk with your optometrist for a recommendation of what type is suitable for your needs.

A hot compress can help hydrate your eyes and bring you relief from the irritating symptoms of dry eye disease. The gentle heat allows the tiny oily secreting glands in your eye, called the meibomian glands, to improve the flow of oil to your tears and slow down tear evaporation.

Typically, you use a USB heated dry eye mask and apply it over your eyes for 10–20 minutes a day, or as recommended by your eye doctor.

The CA-800 corneal analyzer is a simple-to-use corneal topographer to evaluate the anterior corneal surface and eyelids.

This diagnostic tool allows our team to image the meibomian gland, analyze the tear meniscus, to help evaluate dry eye.

Regener-Eyes is a natural, biologic prescription eye drop that helps stimulate the body’s ability to repair and regenerate. This effective eye drop solution is made up of anti-inflammatory proteins that promote healing and reduce inflammation.

Use 1–4 eye drops per eye, per day or as recommended by your eye doctor.

Restasis is a prescription eye drop that treats dry eye symptoms caused by decreased tear production due to inflammation. Using Restasis twice a day, every day, at least 12 hours apart, can help increase tear production and bring moisture back to your eyes.

Xiidra is a prescription eye drop that targets the source of inflammation that can cause uncomfortable dry eye symptoms. When used twice daily, you can experience lasting relief in as little as 2 weeks.
