The Importance of Children’s Eye Exams

A comprehensive eye exam not only determines your children’s prescription for glasses but also helps our team familiarize themselves with your child’s visual needs.

Your children may not always notice that something is wrong with their vision—that’s why it’s vital for parents and caregivers to monitor and report developing vision issues. These issues can hinder learning both inside and outside the classroom.

Common signs and symptoms that can indicate vision issues include:

  • Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
  • The need to squint to see
  • Frequent headaches
  • Losing place when reading
  • Seeing double

If you notice these signs or you suspect your child has vision issues, contact us to book a comprehensive eye exam.

Children’s Eye Exam Frequency

Children’s vision is ever-changing and undergoing development, so consistent eye exams are essential to monitoring changes. The American Optometric Association recommends the following eye exam frequency for children:

  • First exam at 6 to 12 months of age
  • At least 1 exam between 3 and 5 years of age
  • 1 exam before first grade
  • Annually from 6 through 17 years of age

Our team may recommend additional eye exams outside the recommended frequency, depending on your child’s unique visual needs.

What We Cover During the Exam

Beyond determining your children’s prescription for glasses, our exam also checks for crucial visual skills that are important for learning, movement, and coordination, such as:

  • Focusing ability
  • Peripheral vision
  • Color vision
  • Eye-hand coordination
  • Eye tracking

Our team also tests for myopia and offers ZEISS MyoVision Pro Lenses, NaturalVue multifocal contacts, and atropine drops to help control its progression. For more information, visit our myopia control page.
